Funny enough, I can site two examples that
happened to me just in the last week that really demonstrate
that there is no other organization better for networking and
career advancement than the Jaycees.
As you all may know, I work as a contractor for the U.S. Army in
Warren. One of the many things that my company does in support
of the contract that I work on is compile various awards
submissions for technology and engineering to various
organizations. Guess what award came across my desk just last
week? The US Jaycee sponsored Ten Outstanding Young Americans (TOYA)
Award! After blinking a few times in dismay, I proceeded to
offer my help in ensuring that the award would be submitted on
time to the US Jaycees since I had personal experience and
connections in the organization. There was a bit of an issue
with the due date and a misunderstanding with the awards office
on our end, however after I used some of my connections to talk
to the US Jaycees, I was able to obtain an extension for our
group for that particular award. I would never have been able to
do that if I wasn’t a member of the Jaycees and had made friends
and contacts in this organization.
Another fine example of networking and business through the
Jaycees…My contracting company often has visitors coming to see
our Michigan office from Washington, DC and we are often in need
of transportation from the airport to our offices in Warren,
Michigan. Up until this point, we had always been calling a
random transportation company and paying an arm and a leg for
car service to the airport. As it turns out, we have a Jaycee
member from Westland that works for Metro Cars out of DTW. I got
the inside scoop on who to call and now my company is setting up
a permanent contract for a driver for our company’s needs. Its
business for my company and its business for a fellow Jaycee!
The point that I am hoping to convey here is that networking In
this organization is not just about the hands that you shake at
convention, but it is about the friendships you make and the
real affect that these friendships have on our everyday lives.
The networking possibilities within the Jaycees are
endless…wouldn’t you want to offer that opportunity to everyone
that you meet?
You are already a member of this great organization and YOU can
take advantage of the networking opportunities that come about
every day!
