WYANDOTTE — The Jaycees have found a consistent fund-raiser that also gives parents a chance to utilize their bragging rights.

It's the group's annual Beautiful Baby Contest that takes place at the Wyandotte Street Art Fair, which was held this year July 9-12.

"The contest had 60 entrants on display in the Wyandotte Jaycee booth, and people could vote for their favorite by putting change or bills into the jar of that baby," said Jennifer Bramble, one of the fund-raiser's organizers. "This year's contest raised nearly $4,000."

Out of the 60 contestants, two winners were chosen: the most beautiful baby girl and the most beautiful baby boy. The winners were (drum roll please ...) Zoe' Sollars and Alex Ehlert. Zoe' is the daughter of Everett and Maria Sollars. Alex is the son of Kim Krueger and Greg Ehlert. Both of the winners and their parents live in Wyandotte.

Each baby was awarded prize packages prior to Monday night's City Council meeting and was congratulated by Councilman Joseph Peterson.

"Each baby received a prize package that contained donated gifts from the 2008 sponsors," Bramble said. "The sponsors included Wendy's of Wyandotte, Wyandotte Big Boy, Diane Fox of Lia Sophia, Curves Riverside, Lions and Tigers and Beers, Meijer, Edward Jones, and Riverview Gymboree."

The winners also were awarded U.S. Savings Bonds from the Wyandotte Jaycees. Baby Zoe' and Alex will represent the contest and the Jaycees by appearing in the 2009 Wyandotte Fourth of July parade.

Bramble said funds from the Beautiful Baby Contest go to support a wide variety of programming and signature events throughout the year.

Signature events that return each year include the annual Easter Egg Hunt in Bishop Park and the Senior Spaghetti Dinner. The Jaycees also sponsor holiday food and gift baskets during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
