Think you've got
a beautiful baby? Maybe others think so too.
One way to gauge the appeal of
your infant or toddler is through the Wyandotte Jaycees
beautiful baby contest, which will be held all four days of the
Wyandotte Street Art Fair.
Now in its third year, the
contest grew tremendously from its first year, when it made $800
for the Jaycees. Last year it netted $3,500 for the community
group.
"The haunted house used to be
a big fund-raiser, but over the years they've gotten extremely
competitive," said Joseph Voszatka, the group's immediate past
president.
"We've been trying to
diversify, and because this is our biggest community event in
the city of Wyandotte, we were trying to have a bigger presence
and take advantage of a quarter million people coming here."
Rich Cieslowski, who is
coordinating the event, said last year the two main winners (one
boy and one girl) received $500 in prizes donated by local
businesses.
"We will have a display set up
of plastic jars with pictures of babies on them," Cieslowski
said. "People visiting the street fair put in their change and
bills. It's a way of getting a lot of outside community
participation."
Cieslowski said money raised
through the contest helps to fund Jaycees' projects throughout
the year, such as the Easter egg hunt, the Santa House and food
baskets for the needy.
This year there is an added
incentive for those who vote. They will be entered into a
drawing for a chance to win a Diamond Jack Detroit River cruise
for two. Four winners will be picked, one each day of the art
fair. |
